About Chestnut Hill

Philadelphia is a city of neighborhoods — a historic city which unites various distinct residential communities, all nestled in the beautiful Delaware Valley. Referred to as "The Suburb in the City," Chestnut Hill is one of these neighborhoods, and presents the best Philadelphia has to offer. Located in the Wissahickon Valley, on the northwestern-boundary edge of the city, and bordered for the full length on its western side by Fairmount Park, Chestnut Hill was recently designated one of the top seven urban enclaves in the U.S. by Forbes.com.

Chestnut Hill is a walkable community — the village-like retail area on Germantown Avenue and the residential streets boast tree-lined sidewalks and charming architecture steeped in history while still offering the best of modern living. The houses of Chestnut Hill range from modest row homes and cozy twins to historically-significant estate mansions. Within less than three miles are homes by renowned architects such as George Howe, Horace Trumbauer, Thomas U. Walter, Wilson Eyre, Louis Kahn, Robert Venturi, and H. Louis Duhring.

We have a Community Association made up of local residents; an organization of the local business interests called the Chestnut Hill Business Association (a kind of local Chamber of Commerce); an Historical Society; and a Parking Foundation that has been responsible for developing a network of locally-owned parking lots to serve the shopping area. The Wissahickon Valley Park is supported by a local group called Friends of the Wissahickon.

In addition, the community publishes a weekly newspaper, the Chestnut Hill Local; has a local theater group, Stagecrafters; sponsors weekly free summer concerts in Pastorious Park; hosts the annual Garden Festival and Fall for the Arts (street fairs featuring works of local artists, delicious food, and games for kids); and produces the extraordinarily successful Bach Festival, which has grown to a city-wide festival every season.

There are many excellent educational options in the Northwest Philadelphia area and its surrounding suburbs. In addition to public and parochial schools, independent school options include Chestnut Hill Academy, Springside School, Germantown Friends School, William Penn Charter School, Germantown Academy, Mount St. Joseph Academy, and LaSalle College High School.

There is convenient access to Center City by two commuter-rail lines, the Chestnut Hill East (R7) and the Chestnut Hill West (R8). There is also easy access to major auto routes including the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Schuylkill Expressway, the Blue Route (76, 276, + 476), and quick downtown access via Kelly Drive.

Eichler and Moffly is also a corporate sponsor of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
